Normal

An unassuming substitute sheriff, a sleepy small town, a bank robbery gone wrong. On paper, Normal looks like a hundred other thrillers, and that may be the best laid trap of the year. Because behind that deliberately plain title hides a film that climbed into our global top with a 7.1 confirmed by more than 340 votes, owing it to execution well above average. The recipe is familiar but rarely applied this well. A deceptively ordinary hero whose troubled past surfaces in small touches, an isolated county where everyone knows everyone, and a plot that peels its layers one by one to reveal something far more explosive than a botched hold-up. Each revelation recontextualizes the previous one, and the film works that machinery with contagious pleasure. This is mid-budget cinema at its finest. Contained budget, solid cast, precise ambitions, no franchise to launch and no extended universe to set up. That category of film everyone declared doomed, squeezed between blockbusters and streaming filler, keeps proving in our rankings that it breathes just fine. All it takes is a good story told with craft, and global audiences respond. And respond they do, week after week. No thunderous marketing campaign, no bankable star on the poster, just word of mouth quietly doing its job. These discreet trajectories are often the sturdiest, and the most satisfying to follow in our data. If your next movie night calls for a tense, well written thriller that does not treat you like a popcorn dispenser, the title tells the truth. This is anything but normal. One number in this article deserves more attention than the rating itself, the 340 votes behind it. Across the titles covered in these pages, that count ranges from 58 for The Invite to more than 11,000 for Rick and Morty, and it entirely changes what a score means. A 7.1 confirmed by 340 viewers is a stabilized figure, no longer at the mercy of a handful of enthusiasts or detractors, but not yet the verdict of a mass audience either. That is exactly the position mid-budget cinema occupies in our data, past the confidential stage, short of the phenomenon. Normal sits in the same rating band as Cape Fear and The Devil Wears Prada 2, two titles carried by decades of brand recognition. Reaching that level from a standing start is where the real performance lies.

This is not simply a portrait of a studio short on ideas. It is a company mastering the circulation of inherited worlds.

Agent Kim vs The Boys: Reach Is Not EnoughAgent Kim vs The Boys: Reach Is Not EnoughAgent Kim Reactivated and The Boys occupy almost the same TMDB popularity range, 123.3108 for the Korean series and 118.4656 for the American satire. Their ratings are far apart, however, at 7.203 and 8.442. The comparison matters because visibility is partly controlled. When two titles attract similar attention, what turns that attention into approval? Why Television Is Winning the Ratings BattleWhy Television Is Winning the Ratings BattleToday’s TMDB trends tell two different stories. Movies hold the largest popularity scores, with The Odyssey at 937.0796 and Moana at 607.7654, while several television series collect ratings above 8.4. These measures should never be treated as equivalents. TMDB popularity responds to attention and activity, while the average rating reflects user votes. The gap reveals differences in audience and release rhythm rather than automatic television superiority.Mushoku Tensei Is This Week’s Demanding Catch-UpMushoku Tensei Is This Week’s Demanding Catch-UpThis week’s recommendation is not the easiest show to endorse, but it may be the most rewarding one to discuss. Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation carries an 8.469 rating with a TMDB popularity score of 153.6953. That combination suggests a series with less exposure than House of the Dragon but unusually strong approval among viewers who entered its world. Fair warning, that enthusiasm does not erase the deeply uncomfortable behavior of its protagonist.

How to read the TrendingShows global ranking

Every day, thousands of films and shows circulate across streaming platforms, and it has become difficult to tell what genuinely works from what simply benefits from a big marketing push. TrendingShows exists to answer that precise question: what is the world actually watching right now, and why.

Our ranking method

Our rankings rely on worldwide popularity data aggregated by TMDB, a community database fed by millions of users around the world. That score combines several signals: page traffic, vote volume, list additions and how those indicators have moved over recent days. We pull this data every night, sort it by content type, then keep seven rolling days of history so we can measure movement rather than frozen positions. A title climbing ten places in three days tells you something a static top list never shows.

What the numbers say, and what they do not

One important note for reading our pages correctly: popularity is not quality. A blockbuster panned by critics can dominate the ranking for two weeks simply because everyone is talking about it, including negatively. That is why we systematically display the average viewer rating next to the position. The gap between the two is often the most interesting piece of information on the page. We also do not measure the platforms' actual watch hours, which Netflix, Disney+ and Prime Video release sparingly and according to their own methodologies. What we measure is the worldwide attention paid to a title, which is different and often more revealing of the trends taking shape.

Getting around the site

The main ranking filters by type and genre, with twenty categories covering everything from action to documentary. The Statistics page gives you the wider view: dominant genres, language distribution, release years, average ratings compared between film and television. Our weekly report breaks down the week's movements with genuine editorial perspective, and our blog publishes a daily analysis devoted to one specific title, its production context, the reasons behind its success and what it reveals about the current landscape. That is where the bulk of our real work lives.
